Do celebrities have more social responsibilities?

Published by arthi under Social Edit This

In the last post I had written on the effect the celebrities with stick thin figures are having on adolescents. Now that gave rise to a very popular question - do celebrities needs to be more responsible due to their public image? The matter will have different answers from different sections of the society. I will write on both and also my own opinion!

Most celebrities argues that the off-screen image belongs to their personal life and they are free to behave anyway they feel like in that area. For example Shahrukh had argued that smoking is his personal decision and no body need to bother about that. Well he had also added to it that he personally feel that smoking is not good and is trying hard to get rid of this bad habit of his. Now was there any necessity for Shahrukh to clarify his opinion on smoking when its properly mentioned on every cigarette packet-”smoking is injurious to health”. Yes , this step was a good decision, because almost every Indian youngster idolises anything Shahrukh Khan, or King Khan as he is more famously known as, does and this step prevented them from getting the wrong notion that Shahrukh thinks smoking is “cool”.

When a person enters a public field like the entertainment industry they no longer can lead their life according to their own wishes as they are then nothing but public figures. So more responsible behaviour is needed to be showcased by the celebrities. Like a dull charity function becomes a big Page 3 event when somebody like Kajol or Arjun Rampal attends it and thereby gathers more attention and help. Amitabh Bachchan has not only given his full support to Global warming but promoted it with all his might and that had a bigger impact all the other past Global warming awareness campaigns.

Killing endangered animal, running down innocent people at night with a car and lastly having illegal weapons an drugs in their houses is not what a person who is a public figure need to be related to, especially here where crores of people still idolises the celebrities like crazies.

Weight issues among teenagers.

Published by arthi under Children, Educational, Social Edit This

The movie where Kareena Kapoor showed off her size zero figure had become more popular due to her statistics then the movie’s quality and finally it bombed at the box office! But it did its part in influencing people around about what’s the perfect figure is. A sneak peek into any of the prominent schools in the major cities will give you a picture where most of the girl are either seriously overweight or underweight and the boys have started taking regular protein supplements to get their much admired six packs! Wanting to have a marvellous body is obviously not a problem but the fact that most adolescent children take help of severe dieting to reduce weight or adopt artificial method to gain muscles is what causes the worry.

Regular exercises, sports activities, walking or even cycling has educed to almost null due to present sedentary lifestyle of the students where they are either sitting in a classroom in school, coaching or music classes in the evening and then spending the rest of the hours in front of the computer or television. Sedentary lifestyle have made overweight a serious issue and some adopt dangerous measures to cut down those flab and get their dream figure. I think sport activities should be given more priority and that will help the teenagers from worrying too much about their weight and still being healthy and fit.

Keeping track of what children eat is becoming more and more necessary given the increasing number of cardiac issues or nutritional deficiencies n children who either overeat or don’t eat at all…
