Do celebrities have more social responsibilities?

Published by arthi at 9:20 pm under Social Edit This

In the last post I had written on the effect the celebrities with stick thin figures are having on adolescents. Now that gave rise to a very popular question - do celebrities needs to be more responsible due to their public image? The matter will have different answers from different sections of the society. I will write on both and also my own opinion!

Most celebrities argues that the off-screen image belongs to their personal life and they are free to behave anyway they feel like in that area. For example Shahrukh had argued that smoking is his personal decision and no body need to bother about that. Well he had also added to it that he personally feel that smoking is not good and is trying hard to get rid of this bad habit of his. Now was there any necessity for Shahrukh to clarify his opinion on smoking when its properly mentioned on every cigarette packet-”smoking is injurious to health”. Yes , this step was a good decision, because almost every Indian youngster idolises anything Shahrukh Khan, or King Khan as he is more famously known as, does and this step prevented them from getting the wrong notion that Shahrukh thinks smoking is “cool”.

When a person enters a public field like the entertainment industry they no longer can lead their life according to their own wishes as they are then nothing but public figures. So more responsible behaviour is needed to be showcased by the celebrities. Like a dull charity function becomes a big Page 3 event when somebody like Kajol or Arjun Rampal attends it and thereby gathers more attention and help. Amitabh Bachchan has not only given his full support to Global warming but promoted it with all his might and that had a bigger impact all the other past Global warming awareness campaigns.

Killing endangered animal, running down innocent people at night with a car and lastly having illegal weapons an drugs in their houses is not what a person who is a public figure need to be related to, especially here where crores of people still idolises the celebrities like crazies.

    “When a person enters a public field like the entertainment industry they no longer can lead their life according to their own wishes as they are then nothing but public figures.”

    I don’t think that’s realistic. Here in the US celebrities sometimes use their “voice” for influence. There was plenty of that during the recent presidential election. Some of them, when interviewed, weren’t even up on the issues their candidate was supporting. It was embarrassing.

    Hollywood is indeed Hollyweird.

    I think celebrities do need to be more responsible. They know that they have fans out there so they should be careful what they do. Too many people want to follow in the steps of celebrities so they should be careful of their actions. You brought up a great question with this article. Great job. :)

    Thank you both!

    @Roxie
    I think all the celebrities just become a little senseless when it comes to gaining publicity!

    @Mily.Thanks and I think its time celebrities learn to behave well!

    Celebrities forget that fans follow every move of theirs. Whenever they are in public, they are followed. That’s how their life is! So, if Shahrukh wants to smoke, go ahead but at least not in public! I’ve seen him smoking at award functions which is not right.

    @dratiffarid
    I saw him too smoking in award functions and also during IPL. He needs to respect the law and now since public smoking is banned he can’t get away given the camera follows him.

    When you are in the public eye you have to be more careful! If you do something illegal, so many young people are going to follow you, because of who you are.

    Yes, I think they need to be more socially responsible because they have the power to influence people because of their huge fan following.
