Dowry isn’t prevalent among educated familes? Think again

Published by arthi under Women of India Edit This

Hi friends,I used to think that dowry system has at-least been removed from the educated mass of the society and so education is the only solution to this evil practise. I wish I was correct but I was not.

Last evening a marriage was being arranged in a family in our neighbourhood who happens to be our family friend. So my mother was also there on the occasion. After the traditional Indian formalities of meeting each other by the bride and the groom was over then the groom’s family promptly demanded 50,000 Rs for their son in cash and if the amount is given only then this marriage will take place or not. Well the to-be-bride’s father quickly shove this people out of their home. You might be wondering why were they allowed only. Well the arranged marriages works like this here. The to-be-groom is a postgraduate and both his parents professional school teachers in respectable schools. Their educational background was taken as certificate for their family thinking, unfortunately they turned out to be educated lot who don’t deserve their certificates.

Its a sad truth that these practises are still continuing in our country. While education should have solved the problem it has not. People still think that if they have a son then they can cash him during marriage and if they have a daughter then she is a future economical burden in disguise. Some parents will surely marry their daughter to the rogue but if all the daughter’s parents stood up then there may be some changes. Even a drop of contribution matters in a society like ours.
